Hello Leopold Families! I hope your routine is well underway and everyone is enjoying the new school year. We have a lot going on and want to be sure you are kept up-to-date! Thank you to all who attended the Open School House/PFO Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, September 15. Leopold staff and families enjoyed a warm and relaxing fall evening together. Our amazing Leopold teachers and staff served Babcock ice cream and kids played games on the playground. As always, we very much want to engage parents, families and staff in our events! Interested but feel as though you have no time to volunteer? Opportunities abound that require small amounts of time. Consider - if each parent/family gave 1 hour during the year to serve, that would amount to more than 300 hours of volunteering! Feel free to reply to this email or contact Emily Royalty atleopoldpfo@gmail.com for more information. No commitment assumed! Here are some of the activities you could be a part of: * Open House Bake Sale * Room Parent * Timberwolf Trample Fundraiser * Staff Appreciation * Black History Celebration * PFO Board Member Target RedCard Donations ending after 2015-2016 school year After the 2015-2016 school year, Target will no longer be donating back to your designated school for every purchase you make on your Target RedCard. Please make this last year count! If you haven't designated Leopold Elementary as the recipient of your donations, please do so to ensure we can raise money during this final year. This has been an important source of funding for classroom needs, supplies, enrichment programs, and books. Amazon.com Fundraising To help close the gap with the expected loss of funds from Target, please use our Amazon Associates program. Every time you use Amazon, please click through the Amazon link on our fundraising page at www.leopoldpfo.org. Amazon donates to our school when this link is used. Bookmark it on your phone, computer, and tablet! Once again the Leopold PFO is collecting Box Tops for Education! These are the little logos that can be clipped and saved for our school. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. Last year we earned $1800 for Leopold so every little bit counts! There will be three Box Top Collections throughout the year. The class with the most Box Tops per student per collection will win a party! Our first collection will be October 16. Watch your child's backpack for collection sheets in the next few weeks. Remember to collect Box Tops all year! Box Tops can be found on lots of different products. Go to www.boxtops4education.com to find out more. Picture Day is next week! We're looking for volunteers to help out with Picture Day at Leopold Elementary School on Thursday, October 1st. Volunteers will receive a $20 discount towards pictures. (Just write VOLUNTEER: $20 discount on your child's picture order form). The photographers request volunteers check in each class as they arrive, line the students up, straighten clothing and hair, and keep things moving smoothly. Sign up here. Communication

We are welcoming the sunshine and warmer temps as we get ready for some fun, outdoor activities at Leopold!
April PFO Family Meeting Please join us tomorrow evening, April 14, at 6 pm (note the time change from previous meetings) in the Leopold Library for our April PFO Family Meeting. Dan Beaman, REACH Science teacher, will present the exciting STEM curriculum introduced at Leopold this year, Mrs. Sloan will have a principal update, the PFO will have an update on activities, and families can give input on events and ideas. Light snacks will be served and childcare provided. Leopold Grounds Cleanup Our annual spring grounds cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 25 from 9am-12pm. This is a chance for families to come together, help cleanup our school grounds, and take pride in our Leopold community. Gwen Schrader is coordinating the cleanup again this year, so be sure to check in with Gwen when you arrive and see what you can do. Please plan on bringing a rake, gloves and any other equipment that you feel would be helpful. There will be jobs for all ages. There will be bagels available for all who help out. 2015 Timber Wolf Trample Exciting preparations for the Trample continue! The Trample is an annual event, held at Leopold, and open to all of our students and their siblings. This year's Trample will be held on Saturday, May 9, beginning at 10:30 am. The day will include a group warm up, a performance by the UW marching band, the Trample fun run, and a lunch. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate. For those students who chose to do so, you may collect funds for your school that will earn you cool prizes and prize drawing tickets for even more cool stuff! This is Leopold PFO's biggest fundraiser of the year! Annually, we hope to raise around $10,000, which helps us support our teachers, school and students in many ways. We encourage everyone who can to participate in fundraising and volunteering for the event (a sign up will be shared closer to the event). We don't ask kids to sell wrapping paper or food, we don't solicit donations from families, instead we have THIS fun event that focuses on fitness, community and participation. Please join us! Full details and a registration form can be found on the PFO website. Registration forms will also be sent home (hopefully this week). Family sponsorships will be available again this year. For a $100 donation to the Trample sponsorship campaign, your family's name can appear on our event t-shirts. Additionally, if you have any ideas for companies to sponsor the Trample, please let us know. Forms and information for sponsorship can be found at the above link. All sponsorship questions and information can be sent to Pam Baumgartner at pam@baumgartnerlegal.com. Spirit Week The week before Trample (May 4-8) is Spirit Week at Leopold. The Student Council and PFO work together to come up with dress up themes that correspond to a donation item for kids to bring in. Each day, the number of dress-up day participants in each class are counted and the class with he highest percentage wins the trophy for the day! More details to come, but here are the dress up days and donations so you can get thinking about things. Monday, May 4 - favorite sports team / player; donate soccer gear Tuesday, May 5 - favorite book character days - donate gently used books Wednesday, May 6 - crazy hair day - donate hair products Thursday, May 7 - pajama day - donate blankets, towels and linens Friday, May 8 - school colors day - donate non-perishable food items New Soccer Goals Soccer is one of the most popular sports at Leopold! The PFO wanted to reward our students for their awesome collecting of BoxTops with new playground equipment. This year, we are getting new soccer goals. PFO funds, along with funds donated to Leopold by Tri4Schools, were used to purchase a new set of two soccer goals, more appropriately-sized for elementary students. They should be delivered and set up this month. In addition, we have contacted Regent Soccer Club to get new nets for the existing goals on our playground. We are hopeful that we can get more kids engaged in playing soccer through these additions and upgrades. REAP Food Group announces the first annual Family Food Fest! What is Family Food Fest? Kris -- Kris Aman, President Leopold Parent Faculty Organization Encouraging Kids. Connecting Families. Serving Leopold.
Tito's Readathlon challenge is coming to a close! Please join us at the Finish Line event on Tuesday, January 13th at 6:00 pm. Bring your completed training logs to pick a prize and take home another new book. Students will have one more opportunity to listen to local community leaders reading books and to participate in literacy games. Warm up with some hot chocolate, popcorn and healthy snacks. If you would like to inquire about transportation, please contact our Family and Community Engagement Liaison, Jeremy Thornton. Remember to keep up those good reading habits even after this event! Keep Clipping and Saving Box Tops The next Box Tops deadline is January 23 so keep clipping! Collection sheets should be coming home this week, but if your student's doesn't make it home or you need more, click here for a printable sheet. The winning class will get a cookie decorating party!! Check out the Box Tops for Education (BTFE) website atwww.boxtops4education.com to find coupons and new recipes using Box Tops products. Join BTFE to support Leopold, and participate in contests that could earn hundreds of bonus Box Tops for our school. Keep an eye out for non-food products that have Box Tops such as Hanes clothing and Avery office products. Also look for bonus Box Tops coupons at the grocery store checkout and on or inside product packages. Expired Box Tops cannot be submitted so please check the expiration date before sending to school. We can submit Box Tops at any time of the year so if the expiration date is within 60 days please send them to school immediately so we can submit them before they expire. Sadly we often have to recycle dozens of expired box tops. That felt like throwing dimes down the drain. Let's plug the drain and keep the cash! Leopold Giving Tree Many thanks to those of you who made a classroom donation from our Giving Tree. A special thank you to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, an adopt-a-school partner, who made a delivery of Giving Tree goodies before the holidays. The PFO will also be delivering some items from the list tomorrow! I know our staff really appreciates this support for their classrooms and students. Although we had a holiday push, we still invite staff to use this resource for classroom needs, and families to see if there is something you might want to contribute to help our school. Click HERE to see the full list of requests (also available through the PFO website). If you see one or more that you would like to fulfill, please email Kim Holdener at kholdener@hotmail.com that you will be purchasing or donating the item, and let Kim know when and where you will deliver the item (office, classroom, etc.). If you would like a receipt, please let Kim know and we will email one to you. Take a look at the list and see if you might already have these items in your home. If you're not using them, they can be put to good use at school! Please note that donations are tax deductible if given through the Giving Tree program to the PFO, which is a 501(3)(c) organization. All gifts become the property of Leopold Elementary and should stay at the school, even if a teacher does not. What is the PFO? As a follow up to the information in the last email, where we shared the things our parents and faculty (PFO) have been involved with over the past couple of years, we also want to share how easy it is to get involved if you haven't yet! As we plan our spring events, we will have many volunteer opportunities. These activities we host cannot happen without parent and family involvement. We look forward to parent help at our Readathlon tomorrow night (contact Sara Dawkins at scdawkins@msn.com if you'd still like to volunteer), our spring staff appreciation lunch, the Timber Wolf Trample - our annual fun run and fundraiser, our spring Spirit Week (with a competition between classes), spring grounds cleanup volunteers, and we will need engaged parents to join our PFO Board in the coming months. Many of these opportunities require a small time commitment, but also allow you to get involved in your child's educational experience, and meet new families and staff through the PFO. Some roles have a bigger commitment, but also develop great friendships, leadership skills and more. If you would like to come meet other parents, learn more about what the PFO is doing, and find out about getting involved, you can join us for our next PFO family meeting on Tuesday, February 10 at 7 pm in the Leopold library. 4-year-old and 5-year-old Kindergarten Registration Registration for 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) and 5-year-old kindergarten wilMonday, February 2, 2015 from 2:00 - 6:00 PM at all Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) elementary schools except Lincoln, Randall and Marquette. Leopold Giving Tree Please remember to take a look at our staff Giving Tree! If you're considering a holiday gift for your child's teacher, please consider purchasing something from their Giving Tree list. PFO stands for Parent Faculty Organization. At Leopold, every parent, grandparent, or guardian, as well as every staff member, is automatically a member of the PFO.You don't need to pay dues, attend meetings or do anything special to be a "member" so join in! Our PFO is managed by a PFO Board, consisting of a president, co-vice-presidents, co-secretaries and a treasurer. The Board serves as the leadership team that guides decisions on activities, events, support and funds. Often, when staff has a need, they come to a member of the PFO Board to see if we can help out. Same for parents, if there is a question, they often come to a Board member. The Board certainly doesn't have all of the answers, but we can often point someone in the right direction. Each summer, our board evaluates the activities and events we've supported over the previous year to determine how beneficial they are for our school. Do they engage our community? Do they raise funds? Are we able to find volunteers to make them work? Are they fun? From there, planning for these events begins. If anyone has an idea of an activity that you would like to see happen, you are welcome to contact the PFO Board and share your idea. The Board can give you ideas, direction, and perhaps funding, to implement ideas that benefit the students and staff of Leopold. The Board, however, cannot execute everyone's ideas and suggestions on our own. While PFO/PTO boards across MMSD, and across the country, after often judged by attendance at a monthly meeting, meetings are one small component of what our (or any) PFO does. Over the course of the past year, the Leopold PFO Board and volunteers have supported Leopold families by:

Recently 49 schools were awarded grants totaling $78,290. This year Leopold Elementary had $1,338 in endowment income available to use to make grants for imaginative programs and projects that propel student learning which can't currently be funded through the core school budget. You can apply for a credit card, or set up a debit card that will draw directly from your bank account. The benefits to Leopold are the same. Flu Shot Fundraiser Flu shots are the most effective way to prevent influenza and its complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age or older be vaccinated annually against influenza. The Leopold PFO is partnering with the HyVee Pharmacy in Fitchburg to offer flu shots to our community, with $4 from each shot coming back to our PFO. In order for Leopld to receive credit, please take a Flu Shot PFO Fundraiser in with you so Leopold gets credit. The coupons can be found on our blog (http://www.leopoldpfo.org/ leopold-pfo-blog) or you can pick one up on the school office. Shots are covered by most insurances; cash price is $29.99. The fundraiser runs through December 31, 2014.
