Hello Leopold Families. The countdown is on! Nine days of school left.
Yearbooks If you have not yet ordered a yearbook, there are extras available for purchase. You can bring $14 to Emily in the school office to purchase a 2013-14 yearbook. Order School Supplies for Next Year Leopold has partnered with the Staples Schoolkidz program to offer our families an opportunity to purchase required school supplies for the 2014-15 school year now. This is both a fundraising opportunity for our school, and a convenience for parents to avoid shopping for a list of school supplies in the fall. SchoolKidz offers the option of order a kit containing all of the school supplies your student will need in the fall in one box, delivered to the school for your convenience. Flyers wil be coming home with students, and are customized for the supply list of each grade. In addition, kits can be ordered online at http://www.shopttkits.com. You can either fill out the flyer that comes home and return it to school with payment or go to to order. Use account number 51038 and choose the grade your child will be entering next fall. Paper orders are due back to the office by this Friday, June 6 and online orders are accepted through June 13th. If you have questions on the program or ordering, please contact Laura Smith at gwidgeon@yahoo.com. Trample Earning Another big thank you to everyone who attended and helped with our 2014 Timber Wolf Trample. This year we raised about $13,000! We are excited to look at ways we can invest these funds in our classrooms. New PFO Board I am excited to announce some transitions to our PFO Board. Michelle Barfield and Moraima Agosto will be taking over and sharing the secretary duties. Kari Trapskin will join the board as a member-at-learge. We are thrilled to have these parents join our board. We are still looking for someone to share or take on the PFO president role. A huge thank you to Tanya Lettman-Shue, who has served as PFO secretary for the past two years. Tanya has been a dedicated parent volunteer, and I want to thank her for her devotion to Leopold. Sara Dawkins will continue as VP and Emily Royalty will continue as treasurer for the next year, but beginning next year, we will search for replacements for these perspectives as well, per our bylaws. Enjoy the last full week of sanity!

Race to Equity Presentation Leopold PFO has been a part of a broader group, called the Westside PTO, bringing together various PTO members to share ideas and success and engage in communication across MMSD. We meet once a month at schools in the area. The final meeting for the year will feature a presentation from the Race to Equity team, a coalition engaging in a multi-year project dedicated to reducing racial disparities in Dane County. After presenting their data from their first site of analysis - the experience of African Americans in Dane County - we will have a discussion about how PTOs and parent groups can work to build community in their respective schools and how to engage thoughtfully with all parents. Some of the Leopold PFO Board members (myself included) have attended a past presentation from this group, and it is a pretty profound study of issues affecting all Dane County families. From the report: Even starker and more consequential are the disparities evident in Dane County’s rates of child poverty. In 2011, the American Community Survey estimated that more than 74% of Dane County’s black children were poor, compared to 5.5% of white children. In other words, Dane County black kids were estimated to be over 13 times more likely to be growing up in poverty than white children. Our research suggests that this 13 to 1 disparity ratio may constitute one of the widest black/white child poverty gaps that the Census Surveys reported for any jurisdiction in the nation. We have been offered a limited number of seats at the event. If you have any questions or if you are interested in attending, please contact me so that I can RSVP for Leopold attendees and get you further information. http://racetoequity.net 2013-14 Yearbooks Yearbook order forms have been sent home with students. Again this year, we will be offering family sponsorships. Any family that donates $100 or more will have their name on this year's Trample t-shirt. Family donations are due April 18. More information will come about how you can play an active role in making our school and community look great! Cherokee Parent Orientation An orientation for parents of incoming 6th graders will be held on April 30th from 6:30 - 8 pm at Cherokee Middle School. A flyer is posted on our blog. http://www.leopoldpfo.org/leopold-pfo-blog.html I have not received any information from Wright Middle School, but will share that when I do. If you have questions about the transition to Cherokee, I have a 6th grader this year and would be happy to answer what I can, or at least get you pointed in the right direction. Feel free to email me. The 5th grade teachers are very helpful as well. amazon.com Occasionally we get emails from parents asking about the amazon smiles fundraising program through amazon.com. We have researched the program and have set up an amazon smiles account for the PFO. However, using the link through the PFO website to enter amazon is far more profitable for the PFO than using the amazon smiles program. If you are unable to enter amazon.com through the banner ad link on the PFO webiste (http://www.leopoldpfo.org/activities-and-fundraisers.html), you are certainly welcome and encouraged to use the amazon smiles program, but the advertising link is preferable. We are not able to get credits through both programs, so you can choose whichever program works best for you. Remember also to use your Target Red Card and designate Leopold as your school of choice! Leopold Staff Leadership Update At Leopold’s Leadership Team meeting on Monday, March 10, the team discussed the progress being made in the area of Shared Reading. Shared Reading is a component of literacy instruction and usually is what teachers use to begin reading instruction each day. Shared Reading lessons vary in length, but average about 20 minutes, are whole group, and use grade level texts. The concepts modeled by the teacher and discussed in Shared Reading lessons set the stage for guided group work that is tailored to the instructional level of students in each group. General consensus was teacher practice surrounding Shared Reading has grown considerably over the course of the school year. The team also spent abundant time at the meeting discussing a new Common Daily Classroom Schedule for the 2014-2015 school year. The current school year is the first time the school has utilized this type of schedule, thus our experience over the past six months has given us much insight to improve the schedules for next year. Some of the bigger adjustments discussed were to create a sixth lunch period so that each grade level has its own lunch time, moving the start of Specials to 8:15am Tuesday-Friday to accommodate a time for Morning Meetings in all classrooms school-wide to start the day, and clustering all intervention blocks in the morning to maximize available staff support for differentiated student support during What I Need (WIN) time. The team will continue to look at the new Common Daily Classroom Schedule at its next meeting on March 26. Thank you for reading through all of this important info and for all you do for our kids and our school. Have a great week! Kris T-shirt Design Contest Extended
We were a little light on entries for the Timber Wolf Trample t-shirt design contest. The PFO will extend the deadline through the end of the school day on Tuesday. Leopold Night at Qdoba Tuesday is Leopold night at Qdoba from 5-9 pm. Qdoba is located at 5401 Caddis Bend. Please bring your flyer in so Leopold can receive 10% of your purchase. I will post the flyer online on the PFO blog prior to the event Tuesday night. March PFO Meeting Thank you to all of the parents who came to our March PFO family meeting. We had a nice turnout to hear Mr. Budd talk about math, Mr. Beaman talk about science, and Mr. Burkholder give a school update. We tried something new and videoed the meeting for those who might have wanted to come but weren't able. If you follow the link below, you can read the minutes or watch the video. I must point out that I wasn't sure of the best way to video, so the quality is not great, but we'll work on that. The PFO is always open to feedback as to if our meeting topics are informative. We got very positive feedback on this meeting. http://www.leopoldpfo.org/meetings-and-minutes.html Next meeting is Tuesday, April 8. Topics are music, art and family engagement. Important Upcoming Dates: March 18 - Math Night at Open Schoolhouse March 21st and March 28 - early release at 10:45 am April 5 - Leopold Rummage Sale (drop off on April 4) April 8 - PFO Meeting April 14-21 - Spring Break April 26 - Spring Grounds Cleanup May 5 - 9 - Spirit Week May 10 - Timber Wolf Trample PFO Literacy Project Over the past several weeks, Sara Dawkins and Emily Royalty from our PFO Board have been working very hard on developing ideas for a fall literacy campaign for our students for the upcoming school year. They have been writing grant proposals, making community connections and more to fulfill several goals centered around literacy for our students. The PFO works so hard behind the scenes and these ladies deserve lots of credit for the endless hours they are putting in to make Leopold an even better school. We look forward to sharing more information as we solidify the ideas and upcoming program. We will also have a quick PFO update as well as a principal update. Entries are due this Friday, March 16! Previous t-shirts for idea purposes can be found here. Timber Wolf Trample Sponsorship A major component of the Trample, as well as a significant funding source for many of our activities and events throughout the year, is the sponsorship campaign. Businesses are asked to donate toward our event, and in return, they receive advertising on our materials. If you work at, or know of, a business that might be interested in becoming a 2014 Timber Wolf Trample sponsor, please contact Pam Baumartner (pam@baumgartnerlegal.com) so that we can add them to our list. You do not have to ask for the sponsorship (although you are welcome to, personal connections always work best), as Pam is also happy to add them to her contact list. This year we will again be offering family sponsorships - get your name on our Trample t-shirt and support our school too! Watch for more information soon. Spring Grounds Cleanup Please mark your calendars for our spring grounds cleanup on April 26 from 9 am-12 pm. We will work on cleaning up our grounds and getting the garden ready for spring, as well as some possible playground improvements. Many hands make light work so we encourage families and neighbors to join in a fun day of taking pride in our school. Leopold Staff Leadership Update At Leopold’s Leadership Team meeting on Wednesday, February 26, the team discussed outcomes of a district leadership team summit that was attended by groups of staff members from all MMSD schools including Leopold. The general consensus among the Leopold Leadership Team was that we continue to make good progress toward meeting the goals of our school’s SIP plan. We have made strong gains as compared to many other MMSD schools on the implementation of Close Reading across our school. (Close Reading is the explicit use of text dependent questions to guide students’ understanding of literature, often non-fiction texts.) As the February 26 meeting continued, the Team discussed a focused leverage point that could be used to influence student academic gains for the remainder of the year across all classrooms. The Team chose Shared Reading as this leverage point. Shared Reading incorporates grade level texts, an objective aligned to the Common Core State Standards , and combines elements of Close Reading, Gradual Release of Responsibility, and informal assessment. Shared Reading sets the stage for guided practice instruction. The expectation is that Shared Reading will be used at a minimum of four out of five days each week across all classrooms. Continued professional development opportunities will be made available to teachers and staff in the area of Shared Reading. In defiance of the weather, we are beginning to plan some exciting spring events!
2014 Timber Wolf Trample! Planning is underway. Here are some important things to know:
Please mark your calendars for our spring grounds cleanup on April 26 from 9 am-12 pm. We will work on cleaning up our grounds and getting the garden ready for spring, as well as some possible playground improvements. Many hands make light work so we encourage families and neighbors to join in a fun day of taking pride in our school. More information will come about how you can play an active role in making our school and community look great! PFO Meeting Our next PFO family meeting will be Tuesday, March 11 at 7 pm in the Leopold library. Everyone is welcome to attend! We will be having Mr. Beaman, our REACH science teacher talk to us about the REACH science program. Every Leopold student spends time in Mr. Beaman's class during the school year so come find out what fun and exciting things they're up to in this unique program. Mr. Budd, 3rd grade teacher, will talk about fun math activities and how parents can support math skills at home for kids of all ages. Both will be able to answer questions parents have as well. We will also have a quick PFO update as well as a principal update. If you need childcare other than Open Schoolhouse, please let me know in advance. Science Night Science Night is scheduled to take place at Open Schoolhouse TOMORROW March 4th from 6pm-8pm. We hope that this event will show families how fun science is, and expose students to different areas of science. This event will include family challenges, hands-on experiments, and cool demonstrations. Science Night will also feature "MaGicEnergy," an interactive show that includes juggling, storytelling, and magic and inspires kids to engage in environmental stewardship. We are looking for volunteers to participate in Science Night by facilitating interactive exploration stations, serving food, and assisting with set up and tear down. MUCH HELP IS STILL NEEDED to support our awesome Open Schoolhouse group who is sponsoring this fun event for our kids! Please review this online sign up and see how you can participate. Any questions/comments, please contact Kao Yong Thao (608-204-4334,kthao6@madison.k12.wi.us) Leopold Garage Sale Calling bargain hunters and closet cleaners! The Leopold garage sale is scheduled for April 5. Items to donate for the garage sale can be brought in on Friday, April 4 (drop-off time to be determined). Mrs. Czech is organizing the garage sale and would like a few parent volunteers to help out! If you are interested in helping (and getting a first look at the goods), you can email Mrs. Czech at pczech@madison.k12.wi.us. DLI Summit DLI parents are invited to attend a DLI Summit and BoE Forum. This is a summit designed for DLI parents, teachers and stakeholders who want to have conversations with other parents and stakeholders from all the MMSD DLI schools. The DLI Summit is being organized by Nuestro Mundo parents and the Latino Education Council and will be hosted at Centro Hispano on Sat. March 8th from 9 -1:30. Food and childcare provided. RSVP requested as seats are limited. The Board of Ed. candidates will be there over lunch to hear from families. Backpack flyers were sent home with DLI students. Race to Equity Project Last week, Sara Dawkins (PFO VP) and I attended a presentation on the Wisconsin Councils of Children and Families' (WCCF) Race to Equity project. This was an eye-opening presentation about a multi-year project to reduce racial disparities in Dane County. I would encourage everyone to visit the project's website at http://racetoequity.net. and review the first report issued by the project. Presentations have been given by Race to Equity throughout Dane County to various groups. The presentation we went to at Franklin Elementary School was very well attended. We are considering ways to bring this discussion to Leopold for our community and families as well. It is worth your time to look at and understand some of the powerful data that has been collected so far. COMMUNITY NEWS Madison Reads Leopold On March 1st there will be a free public reading from Aldo Leopold's work at the UW Arboretum Visitor Center from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturday, March 1st. Eric Liljequist, a retired teacher from Leopold, is one of the readers. Thanks everyone. Have a great week! Kris |
