Update from the Leopold PFO for the Week of October 13, 2014

10/13/2014

Good morning Leopold Families. Thanks to everyone who came out to Roman Candle last week! Let's do it again this week.Leopold NightS at Roman Candle

This fall there are TWO Roman Candle fundraising nights - Wednesday, October 8, and Wednesday, October 15. We will receive a percentage of all sales for those bringing in the flyer or mentioning Leopold ALL day long. This will include dine in, carry out, delivery and gift card sales (think stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, etc!)

Mrs. Sloan will be working both nights, so the kids will be getting waited on by their principal!

In addition, they are having a "coloring contest", and the class with the most "entries" will win a pizza party!

Lastly, Roman Candle will donate no less than 10%, and the more families that partake, there will be more donated (based on a sales tier).

Questions can be directed to kylla atkisson at [email protected].

Vision Screening Volunteers Needed
Vision screening for KG, 3rd, and 5th graders will be held on October 23rd from 7:45-11:30. Our school nurse, Lori Zinck-Jezwinski would like a few additional volunteers to help with this event. Even if you can only come for part of the time, the extra hands are very helpful!

If you are available, please contact Lori Zinck-Jezwinski at [email protected] with any assistance you can provide.

Get To Know You Nights
The PFO's Get To Know You Nights will continue next week. This is a night for each grade to come together to meet new families, and catch up with those you know. For each of these evenings, the PFO provides pizza, veggies and a drink. Families can come for a casual dinner conversation. The only thing we ask is that families fill out the RSVP form to let us know how many from your family are coming so we can be sure to have enough food. Forms have been sent home, but if you didn't get one or prefer to RSVP by email, please send a note to Sara at [email protected]. Be sure to include the grade and number attending. The dates for each grade are:

October 14 - 4th grade, 6-7 pm
October 21 - 5th grade, 6-7 pm

Bake Sale Wrap Up
A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated bake sale items and helped out with the event last week at Open House. We made $464 for PFO projects and donated $180 to the Ashlee Steele Memorial fund for the benefit of former Leopold students, Jack and Rachael Steele.

Flu Shot Fundraiser
Flu shots are the most effective way to prevent influenza and its complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age or older be vaccinated annually against influenza.

The Leopold PFO is partnering with the HyVee Pharmacy in Fitchburg to offer flu shots to our community, with $4 from each shot coming back to our PFO. In order for Leopld to receive credit, please take a Flu Shot PFO Fundraiser in with you so Leopold gets credit. The coupons can be found on our blog (http://www.leopoldpfo.org/ leopold-pfo-blog) or you can pick one up on the school office.

Shots are covered by most insurances; cash price is $29.99. The fundraiser runs through December 31, 2014.
Open Schoolhouse Continues
Come to Leopold from 6pm-7:30 on Tuesday nights. Partnering with various nonprofits in the area, Open School House will now offer at least four separate opportunities for students and families to participate in. These classes will run for three week sessions, focusing on either Physical Activity, Education, Life Skills, and Leopold Family Sessions, an opportunity to interact with principals, teachers, and help guide the direction of our school. At the end of every set of sessions, we will host a large Party Night for all the families, before starting a new set of sessions. This month's programming includes:
October 14 Party Night - Family Fall Pumpkin Painting: 6-6:30 Dinner, 6:30-7:30 pumpkin painting.
Basketball Camp: Fitchburg Rec is hosting four weeks of basketball drills and games appropriate for all elementary-age children. Parents are welcome to participate as well.
Learning While Playing Together: The Fitchburg Public Library will hold family-based learning activities to help students gain new tools for literacy, math and science.
Exploring Your Natural World: Ex;lor, learn how to care for and interact with the outdoor world. Build bird feeders, learn how to identify wild life and more.
November 18th Culture Night

Questions regarding Open Schoolhouse can be sent to Josh Miller at [email protected] or Pat Smith at [email protected].

Tito's Readathlon Literacy Event
The PFO will lead an all-school literacy event, encouraging kids to read, write, and much more! The kickoff, or Starting Line event will be held December 2, in the evening and the Finish Line event will be held on January 13, in the evening. Students will get to hear from guest authors and readers, participate in a book swap, and much more.

Please watch for more information in the coming weeks.

*We are encouraging families to save any books your children are done with to bring in for the all-school book swap at our Starting Line event.
New PFO Volunteers Needed
As with all successful volunteer organizations, change is what keeps good ideas flowing and participation expanding. It was with this in mind that the Leopold PFO Bylaws were written to provide turnover for each of our Leopold board members every two years. The PFO Presidentterm actually ended at the end of last school year. Since we were not able to find any takers for this fun and important job, I stayed on through the summer and start of the year to keep things going. However, in December, I will be done with this position, regardless of if a replacement is found. This is for many reasons, but mostly I believe that change is good! Each new board member brings fresh ideas and perspective. No one has to do what the person before them did, they just have to bring enthusiasm, dedication and interest in Leopold. The PFO President position can be held by one person or shared by two to split responsibilities a bit. Training is provided!! Please email me or talk to me know if you would like any more information.

In addition, at the end of this school year, we will also need to identify a new PFO Vice President and PFO Treasurer. The Vice President coordinates volunteers, as well as other things. This position could also be shared. The treasurer manages the PFO's finances. Although this might be harder to share, the Board is certainly open to creative ideas here as well.

If you are not interested in a board position, we have some important but shorter-term openings as 5th grade parents are transitioning out of Leopold after this year.  Our Box Top coordinator runs our school Box Tops contests including providing flyers, class counting and tracking. We have another volunteer who does all of the counting and sorting to submit to Box Tops so this would not be part of the role. Please contact Michelle Barfield or me if you would like more information.

We are also in need of a Timber Wolf Trample fundraising coordinator. This is a great position to raise money for our school. An amazing foundation has been put in place and really is more management than fundraising. This is a very important position to our school, as we raise around $10,000 each year through these efforts. Please contact Pam Baumgartner or me if you would like more information.

Thank you for considering offering your time and energy to keep so many important and fun programs at Leopold strong so that we can continue to support our students, staff and families through great programming!
