Get to Know Our Get to Know Each Other Nights continue next week with Grade 3. We have had a great turnout for these events and we look forward to meeting even more of you in the upcoming weeks. If you have not already RSVPd through the handout or email, please let me know if your family will be attending any of the following: October 1 - Third Grade October 8 - no Get to Know night - come to all-school open house and stop by the cafeteria for ice cream from the PFO! October 15 - Fourth Grade October 22 - Fifth Grade An Apple Affair Flyers have been sent home with all students this week for an exciting upcoming event. The Leopold PFO will hold An Apple Affair - an event to raise money to purchase iPads for Leopold, at Lilliana's restaurant on Monday October 7, from 6-8 pm. This is adults-only event for Leopold families and anyone in our community who would like to enjoy socializing, great food and drink, and exciting raffle prizes. You do need to purchase tickets for An Apple Affair. You can visit the PFO webpage for the event here: http://www.leopoldpfo.org/an-apple-affair.html Harvest Fest Excitement for our first-even Harvest Fest is growing. We are looking forward to many interactive experiences for our families. Classes will participate in pumpkin decorating ahead of the event and Harvest Fest activities will include a pumpkin launch, hay rides, cake walk, face painting, prize drawings, dunk tank, live music, food booths and more. Flyers with more details will be coming home soon, including information on how to purchase wrist bands and donate for the cake walk and grade-level prize baskets. Picture Day School picture day is next Thursday, October 3. Order forms are going home now if you would like to purchase pictures of your child. We need some parent volunteers to help get kids in line and ready for their pictures. This is a fun and easy way to volunteer at Leopold. Our Geography Bee is scheduled forDecember 20, at 1:15PM in our cafeteria and will include the top four finishers of each fifth grade classroom competition. Our Spelling Bee will be held on January 16, at 1PM also in our school cafeteria and will include the top four students from each classroom spelling bee competitions in grade five. Fourth and fifth grade student teams for the annual Book Bowl will begin forming just prior to winter break. Students will be responsible for indicating interest in participating on a team. The school Book Bowl events are schedule to take place in mid-March. Our fifth grade Science Fair is scheduled for May 23 at 1:00PM and our fifth grade culmination ceremony will be on June 10 at 1:00PM in our cafeteria. Get to Know Each Other Nights Many thanks to the kindergarten families who came to our Get to Know Each Other Night last week. Many of us enjoyed connecting with the others in our child's class as well as other Leopold kindergarten families. Remember, the First Grade Get to Know Each Other Night is tomorrow, September 17 from 6-7. If you have not already RSVPd by email or form, please just send a quick email back to me with the number attending. It helps us make sure we have enough food available for everyone. Future Get to Know Each Other dates: September 24 - Second Grade October 1 - Third Grade *October 8 - all school open house* October 15 - Fourth Grade October 22 - Fifth Grade Leopold Night at Dairy Queen Tuesday, September 17, is our first monthly fundraising night out! Stop by Dairy Queen for dinner and/or a treat between 4 and 10 pm. Dairy Queen will donate 20% of all proceeds during that time to Leopold, so tell your neighbors to stop by too! For our first grade families, this will make a perfect dessert stop on the way home from Get to Know Each Other night. Flyers were sent home last week, so bring those along with you when you stop by. If you need one, the flyer will be posted on our blog today. http://www.leopoldpfo.org/leopold-pfo-blog.html An Apple Affair at Lilliana's Restaurant The Leopold PFO is excited to partner with Lilliana's restaurant for a fundraiser to continue our efforts to bring iPad technology to our classrooms. On Monday, October 7, from 6-8 pm, we will be hosting an adults-only event featuring an apple-themed menu and drinks as well as an extensive selection of gift baskets for raffle. This event is open to the community. Invitations will be sent home soon and a website is being set up for ticket purchase. We are looking forward to the opportunity to socialize, while raising important funds for our school. Harvest Fest Leopold's annual fall event, Harvest Fest (formerly called FunFest) will take place on Saturday, October 19, from 1-4 pm. This is a fun event to get out and see other families and enjoy a fun school carnival. We will have a cake walk, face painting, gunny sack races, pumpkin games, a dunk tank, local police and fire visitors, prize drawings, demonstrations, and great food. Watch for flyers to order to order wristbands, donate baked goods for the cake walk, and donate to a grade-level prize basket. We will also have a volunteer sign up coming out soon. Box Tops Box Top collection forms were sent home this year at registration so you could get an early start on collection! If you did not get a Box Top collection sheet, please visit our blog here http://www.leopoldpfo.org/leopold-pfo-blog.html where one will be posted sometime today. The first submission deadline is November 15. The class that collects the most Box Tops (prorated for class size) will receive a pizza party! The class that collects the most Box Tops throughout the year will receive a class party at Pump It Up. So, get cutting and turn those Box Tops in to your students teacher by November 15. Leopold gets 10cents for every Box Top collected, so be sure to ask friends and family to save them too! Hello Leopold Families! We are beginning another exciting school year. The PFO has been busy this summer and we are looking forward to sharing lots of great things with our Leopold community! Our kids will be welcomed back to school with new lockers in our halls for all grades. What a great improvement to our school. Along with a charging cart and apps purchased by the school, we are excited to bring a new tool to teachers and classrooms, which should be in classrooms when school starts. Thanks to everyone who has supported our school and the PFO over the past several years to make this possible. On Friday, we were notified that Leopold is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Berbee Technology Education Foundation to purchase additional iPads! Thank you to the TEF for this great opportunity! GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER This year the PFO will be hosting Get-to-Know Each Other nights for each grade. The PFO will provide dinner and each class will have a table to eat together so families can meet each other. The dates for each grade are below. Forms and RSVPs will be coming home this week. You can RSVP by responding to this email too. I just need to know the grade and how many are coming. September 10 - Kindergarten September 17 - First Grade September 24 - Second Grade October 1 - Third Grade *October 8 - all school open house* October 15 - Fourth Grade October 22 - Fifth Grade FALL FEST Over the past few years, our attendance and revenue for FunFest has been declining. Because of this, the PFO has decided to start a new event call Harvest Fest. Harvest Fest will be a great event for our Leopold community with a fall theme. We’ll keep some of our most popular FunFest events like the cakewalk, face painting and others, while adding fun new events like pumpkin decorating, fall activity demonstrations and fall treats! Watch for much more information to come. If you’d like to offer any ideas for this event, feel free to email me. Fall Fest will take place on October 19, from 1-4 pm. NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MR. BURKHOLDER I would like to introduce Mat Thompson as our new Leopold Assistant Principal. Mat has been with MMSD for 19 years, most recently working as a special education Program Support Teacher at both Leopold Elementary and Sherman Middle schools. He has a wealth of knowledge in the area of special education and RtI and has accumulated a broad array of diverse experiences working as a classroom teacher, literacy consultant, professional developer, facilitator, coach, and data analyst. Mat is a National Board Certified Teacher and holds both a BS and an MS in special education and is currently pursuing an additional masters degree in Language Literacy. Mat’s skills are well positioned to support our work in the coming year at Leopold. Please join me in welcoming Mat as our new Assistant Principal! PFO MEETING DATES We have set the PFO meeting dates and topics for the year. We are excited to have staff members join us o talk about these important topics. DLI parent meetings will also piggy back on some of these. We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7 pm in the library. Reminders will be sent out for each meeting. Interpreters and child care are available at each meeting. Here are the dates and topics planned: September 10 and October 8: Get to Know Each Other Nights so those events will have a very brief PFO overview and update November 12: iPads and Common Core Standards December 10: TAG and Standardized Testing February 11: Art, Special Ed and Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) March 11: Math and Science April 8: PE / Music / Orchestra May 13: School Garden RESTAURANT FUNDRAISERS Many thanks to Kylla Atkisson who planned some great restaurant fundraisers for us this year. For those restaurants that require a flyer for Leopold families to get credit, we’ll send those out shortly before each event and they will be available on the PFO blog as well. Last year we collected more than 10,000 Box Tops! That’s an amazing number and a simple way to earn money for our school. Any BoxTops or Labels for Education can be sent to school at any time with your child or they can be placed in the collection mailboxes found just inside the Post Road doors. *We are NO LONGER collection milk caps or pop tabs so you do not need to send those in to school* FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL COFFEE Tomorrow morning, the PFO will be providing coffee for all adults dropping off kiddos. Stop for a cup and say hello to fellow Leopold parents. Look for a table with coffee and cups set up outside the school. Thanks to Starbucks for their support! COMMUNITY EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES ONLINE BULLETIN BOARD New this year, community groups and organizations will no longer be able to send backpack flyers home with MMSD students.
