Hello Leopold families. Welcome back after a long, cold break! I hope you were able to enjoy some quality time with your family. The PFO is excited about lots of exciting things going on in 2014!
First and foremost, we are searching for some parents interested in stepping up some volunteer efforts in 2014. We have several needs, both PFO Board positions and other events that our PFO sponsors. These are all important to our active and vibrant Leopold community. We know many parents are hesitant to take on leadership roles for a variety of reasons. Our current Board and volunteer leaders are happy to train and guide new volunteers for as long as needed. I believe, however, that it is essential to any organization to have fresh ideas and perspective, so we need to be sure that our Board and volunteer positions change over regularly to keep our PFO strong and healthy! PFO volunteers can be moms, dads, grandparents, or anyone with a Leopold affiliation. Many of our Board members and volunteers have full time, demanding careers, own their own businesses, have very busy kids, have kids at multiple schools, have younger kids and older kids, and are overcommitted already (that's what makes them fabulous!). The diversity of ideas and experiences are an asset to Leopold and we encourage you to spend some time considering the importance of volunteering at our school and demonstrating the value of education and involvement for your kids. Here are some of our immediate needs, but we are always open to other ideas that you may have:
Giving Tree Thank you to the many parents and community groups that supported our Giving Tree this year! Our staff was so appreciative for everything received. The Giving Tree will continue to be updated online, but the actual tree in the lobby will come down for now. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Leopold will be holding an Open Schoolhouse event to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy on January 21st from 6-8 pm. The evening will consist of poetry, dance, and music performances by students and parents, followed by a family art activity inspired by Dr. Kings, "I Have a Dream" speech. Food will also be provided. Please RSVP by filling out and returning the yellow flyer that was sent home, or by contacting Delia Watkins at 608-204-4336 or [email protected]. Leopold High Five Night Leopold's High Five Night is scheduled to take place on Jan. 14th, during Open Schoolhouse. The evening will consist of workshop sessions on positive behavior support (PBS), morning meetings, and the Second Step program. There will also be a family scavenger hunt that incorporates positive behavior, and an art gallery inspired by the Leopold High Five. Open Schoolhouse Staff is looking for more volunteers to help with set up/tear down/serving food, etc. Please visit this online sign-up to volunteer for this fun event. MMSD Technology Plan From MMSD... We have made considerable progress in crafting the five-year Information & Technology Plan, including identifying central themes and preliminary recommendations. Our website (mmsd.org/techplan) has lots of information on the plan and is continually updated with new resources and our latest thinking. Please visit this website to learn more about the plan and to offer your ideas via the online feedback form. We also encourage you to share this link widely so we can gather as much feedback as possible. All the input collected will help us craft a stronger, more compelling plan that will push the district forward in the coming years to achieve our goals. Remember to check the MMSD Community Events bulletin board for other activities and announcements. https://pubinfoweb.madison.k12.wi.us/communityevents Have a great (short) week and dress your kiddos warm for coming to and going from school!

Oh my, do things get busy in the spring! Now if only we could get outside to enjoy them even more in the sunshine! A New Record A huge thank you to Pam Baumgartner and the small group of volunteers who identified and contacted local businesses to solicit sponsorships for this year’s Timber Wolf Trample. We collected a record amount of $6,350 in sponsorships and more than $1,800 in prize donations. We can’t wait to see what the kids can do with their donation collection efforts! Pam has worked tirelessly over the past few weeks on the sponsorship drive. It is a big (but rewarding) job to organize the sponsorship aspect of Trample and we are all very thankful for her efforts! We are also very appreciative of the local businesses that support our community, our school and our students. Please be sure to check out the extensive list of sponsors here and be sure to show your patronage to those that support Leopold! Spirit Week Don’t forget, the Trample is May 11. The kids are “training” in gym class and should be hard at work collecting donations for great prizes. Leading up to the Trample we will be holding Spirit Week. In an effort to help our kids learn about giving back to our community, along with the dress-up theme each day, we are asking kids to bring in a “themed” donation for a local organization that serves our community. Details will follow soon about the theme for each day and items to donate. Box Tops Collection The Final Box Top sheet of the year has been sent home with all students. The classroom that collects the most Box Tops by May 13 will win a party from Pump It Up. All students from the winning classroom will be entered in a drawing to win a Cinch Sac with their name on it! Leopold Goes to the Duck Pond The Leopold PFO and the Madison Mallards invite you to the Mallards game on August 10, 2013 at 6:05 p.m. Each $16 ticket purchased will include a box ticket in the Mallards grand stand, one hour of an all-you-can-eat ballpark food, soda and water, a fun baseball game, and best of all, $2 from every ticket sold will be donated back to the PFO. Bring the family and your friends! Order forms will be sent home in the coming weeks. Get Fit at Leopold From Jennifer Compton, AmeriCorps Volunteer:
Lunch Buddies Our Leopold counseling staff is looking for some adult volunteers to be lunch buddies for some special students. Lunch Buddies is a program designed to give select students social and emotional support, and provide these kids with more positive role models. Adult volunteers spend lunch and recess with their student buddies once a week. Volunteers can choose any of the three lunch periods (11- 11:40, 11:40- 12:20, 12:20-1) and are assigned a buddy based on recommendations from our school social workers. Of course, parents are also asked first to give an ok. Kids love the chance to show off their school and friends to special adults. For recess, they can choose to go outside, or stay in and read or do a special activity with their buddy. For forty minutes once a week, the amount that students appreciate this extra attention is incredible. Being a lunch buddy is a great way to get more involved in Leopold, meet staff and students, learn about the school day, and grow a positive connection with kids that can really influence what they think of themselves and their school. Here is what one of our adult lunch buddies said about his experience: "I can sum up the Lunch Buddy program in one word: powerful. What started out as him barely making eye-contact with me has transformed into his eyes lighting up every time he sees me coming down the hall, and eager hopes that I’m coming back next week. The Lunch Buddy program provides an easy access point to invest time and words of affirmation into the next generation of leaders, and I am confident the seeds planted today will bare awesome fruit tomorrow. It has become a highlight of my week, and I give it my highest recommendation!" ~Josh If interested, please contact Adam Emmart at [email protected]. A Conversation with Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham Please visit here to find out more about the new superintendent’s upcoming conversations throughout the district. From Arlene Silveria, MMSD Board of Education We have some updates for you on the state budget and the private school vouchers. We need your help! Where do I find the most updated information on the governor's budget and how it impacts MMSD? The district has updated their budget page. There are links to talking point on private school vouchers, special education vouchers and the proposed charter school legislation. These budget proposals, if passed, could drain $37 million from Madison schools over the next 5 years! In addition, there is a link in the right-hand column that will take you to a page providing information on how you can advocate for public education. We need you to inform your community about these issue and ask them to register their opposition. https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/budget Is there something I can sign to register my opposition to private school vouchers? Our state representatives have put together a petition against the private school vouchers. In the link below, please click on the stop sign and sign the petition. Then please SHARE this with everyone you know. (the web site at the capitol is a bit clunky. If you submit the petition and it takes you back to the welcome page....it worked.) http://legis.wisconsin.gov/assembly/taylor/Pages/default.aspx Press Conference - please attend if your schedule permits The Dane County School Board Consortium and Dane County Superintendent Consortium will be holding a press conference detailing the impacts of the Governor’s proposed budget on public schools at noon on Wednesday, April 10, in room 411 at the State Capitol. School board members, superintendents, parents and business community members will address the governor’s proposed budget and its impact on public schools. 15 districts will be represented. If you are in the area, we hope you will attend. It will also be an opportunity for you to meet our new MMSD superintendent, Jen Cheatham. MMSD Budget On April 22, the Board will be receiving budget information from the Administration regarding the MMSD budget for the 2013-14 school year. Thanks everyone! Have a great week! Hello families. I hope everyone had a great spring break, even though it wasn't very spring like for those of us who stayed in Madison. But, as the weather warms up, we can all look forward to the May 11 Timber Wolf Trample!
Timber Wolf Trample Update Registration Forms are coming home Friday. The forms include a section for kids to collect donations from friends and family and earn prizes, register for the race, and a waiver for participation. If you need to download the form, you can find it here in English and Spanish. In the coming weeks, we will have Spirit Week, a Trample pep rally, and other fun activities leading up to the big event. In the budget proposal, the implementation of private school vouchers in Madison, coupled with money targeted toward independent charter schools and NO increase in funding from the state will be financially devastating to our school district. Information is linked. https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/node/10455 We need your help to advocate for 3 things: 1. Remove the voucher and independent charter school expansion from the budget 2. Require accountability 3. Restore funding to public education On the second page of the linked document, there are ways to contact the legislature. In addition to contacting our Madison legislators, please also spread the word to any family and friends you have in other areas of the state. All legislators must hear from their constituents on how negative this budget is for public education. Please share this information with your parent groups. If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact the Board at [email protected] A Message for Parents of 5th Graders from the Cherokee PTO I'm Co President at Cherokee MS PTO and we are in the process of finding great parents from Thoreau and Leopold that have kids moving to 6th grade. We have openings on the PTO Board and lots of volunteer opportunities (dances, magazine sales, ultra zone nights, etc….). I would love to make personal connections with incoming 6th grade parents that might be interested! We also have an opening for VP! If you are interested, please contact Beth Dohrn at [email protected]. Get Fit In Fitchburg Please see the attached flyer regarding the upcoming Get Fit in Fitchburg event at Leopold Elementary. Thanks everyone. Have a great weekend! Good evening Leopold Families. It's been a tough weekend to be a parent of elementary school kids. I hope you were all able to squeeze in a few extra minutes with your kiddos this weekend. In the event you have not seen Friday's and Saturday's messages from Principal John Burkholder or Sunday's message from Superintendent Jane Belmore, they are both worth your time to read.
Leopold Staff Treat Day Please consider putting your baking, cooking, or purchasing premade snacks expertise to good use and help our teachers/staff get through the last crazy day before Winter Break. Leopold parent Kristi Buscemi is organizing the annual Winter Staff Treat Day, which will be held on Friday December 21. We would like to ask parents to bring in some special goodies for staff on Friday. Kristi will be at school by 9:00 a.m. on the 21st, you can drop your item off to her then, or send it in with your student. Be sure to label items "staff lounge". If you bring in items before 9 a.m. you can leave them with Jane or Emily in the school office. Some ideas of things to bring: cheese and crackers, salads, dips/chips, cookies/bars, crock pot casseroles, fruit trays, candies. If you are able to help out, please email Kristi with the item you think you'll bring. If you aren't sure yet what you'll bring, no problem, just let me know you're bringing something. [email protected] Also, label any dishes with name and teacher and I'll get it back to you via backpack express. Larger/breakable items can be picked up in the staff lounge. Open Schoolhouse Thursday will be the last Open Schoolhouse of 2012! Come grab a warm winter drink and check out the cookie decorating station. The ZUMBA instructor has a special surprise for all participants. Come anytime from 6-8 pm for a night of cozy family fun! Traffic Safety Please help keep all of our kids safe by obeying the signs and regulations regarding parking and traffic around school. Attached is a brochure that details safety and parking information. Fundraising During our recent BoxTop collection contest, our kids brought in more than 10,000 BoxTops! This is in addition to the 10,000 turned in earlier this year. This is AWESOME!!!! Classes are being totaled and the winners will be announced soon! Keep saving BoxTops for our next contest in the spring. Our Amazon earnings are already at $181 for the year! That is double our earnings from last year. Please continue to enter Amazon.com through the link on www.leopoldpfo.com so we can get credit for whatever you buy! We will also be using our Campbell's and My Coke Rewards points to buy some Giving Tree items for our staff. Giving Tree Speaking of the Giving Tree, remember to check teacher wish lists here. Consider adding to a classroom library for a holiday gift. Thanks everyone. Have a good last week before break, and enjoy the time off. School resumes on January 7. Hello families. Did you miss an email from me last week? A rare occasion - I had nothing to say! Don't worry, I'm going to make up for it.
Timberwolf Trample I know I've mentioned this before, but Leopld's biggest fundraiser for the year, our Timberwolf Trample fun run, is scheduled for Saturday, May 11. We are still in desperate need of organizers for this event. If you're the type that loves big projects, you can take it on in it's entirety, but if you like to help on a smaller scale, we can also organize by committee. We did this for FunFest and it worked quite well. This fundraiser brings in approximately $10,000 for our school so it is very important that we keep it going! You don't have to be a runner, you don't have to be a fundraiser, we can work with you to find the right role if you are willing to help. Please contact me, or anyone on the PFO, if you might be willing to at least consider this really fun, exciting and beneficial opportunity to support your students and staff! Easy Fundraising I'm going to keep hammering home these easy ways to make money for our school because I much prefer these options to having to send our kids out to sell wrapping paper or cookie dough! Many of these are especially helpful during the holidays: 1) BoxTops - keep 'em coming. The deadline for the first class contest is Dec. 4 (Tuesday) but we can take them any time. Send them with your child for their teacher to collect, or bring them to the office. We are on pace for a record-setting year! 2) Target RedCard - A debit or credit card option. No cost to you. You get 5% off all of your purchases, free shipping for online orders, and 1% of your total comes back to Leopold. Last we checked, there were maybe less than 20 families with the card, but we still make $1,500! Imagine the potential!! 3) amazon.com - if you need to order anything on amazon.com - from lotion to toys to books - first go towww.leopoldpfo.org and click on the amazon link right on the home page. Then, just shop as normal throughamazon.com. By entering through our ad, we automatically get a percentage from each purchase. Tell your parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, neighbors, anyone! 4) eBoxtops marketplace - start here for your (non amazon.com) shopping and leopold will get eBoxtops for your purchases. You can start here, go to target.com, get eBoxtops, 5% off, free shipping and 1% back for Leopold. Wow! So easy. 5) Continue to bring in your campbell's labels, pop tabs, and enter points from all coke products atwww.mycokerewards.com, as we use all of those programs as well. On the fundraising note, our election day bake sale was very successful, raising over $400. Thanks to Lisa Shebesta for organizing the sale, and to all of those who baked, volunteered, or bought treats! Our Little Cesars night was less successful than in the past, raising $100. We will work to improve communication so that our spring Little Cesar's night can be more successful. Little Cesars is a great community partner and we thank them for working with us! Giving Tree 'Tis the Season! To show our appreciation to the dedicated Leopold Elementary staff, the PFO is sponsoring a "Giving Tree." We have asked all staff members to share a wish list for their classroom/department. A “giving tree” will soon be put up on the wall opposite the main entrance, or check out www.leopoldpfo.org, to see which wishes you would like to grant. The PFO will be collecting the gifts and presenting them to the staff members on Friday, December 21st. Smaller items can be dropped off at the main office between now and December 20th. Please contact Erin to make arrangements for larger items. Do not wrap your gifts, but be sure to securely attach the recipient's name on the gift. Unless you would like to remain anonymous, include your name as well. Some wishes are time sensitive such as volunteering, custom-made gifts, or back-ordered items. If you are interested in fulfilling a request that will not be available by the 21st, please contact Erin and she will write your contact information in a card to be given to the recipient. Some of the wishes on the list have a hyperlink to show a specific item. These links are not intended to endorse a particular business. Online access to the wish list allows parents, family, and friends an opportunity to participate in the “Giving Tree”. To minimize duplication, once you have decided on an item to give, please contact Erin by e-mail or phone, and she will remove the item from the website and/or Giving Tree. Please direct any questions to: Erin Farrell Adamany Chair, PFO Giving Tree [email protected] (608) 513-9744 Thank you for your generosity! Note: District policy states that teachers cannot accept gifts of commercial value from pupils or parents. However, as a 501(3)(c) organization, the Leopold PFO can accept donations and, in turn, give those gifts to the classroom where they are requested. Gifts become the property of Leopold Elementary, and are marked as such. A receipt is available below for tax purposes, where applicable. Info from Leopold / MMSD Some new information from the district has been posted on the PFO website for easy access: Please visit here to read updated information on the district's policy on severe weather days. Please visit here to read about MSCR Winter 2013 Programs. Please visit here to read about changes to MMSD Summer Enrichment for 2013. That's all for this week. Thank you for your dedication to our school! |
