Leopold PFO Update 2/17/13

2/17/2013

Hello Leopold Families. I hope you're hungry for pizza because this Tuesday, February 19, is Leopold Night at Little Cesars! Stop in any time between 11am and 10pm, and be sure to bring the small yellow flyer that came home in backpacks last week! If you didn't get a flyer or can't find yours, I will post them on the blog for your to print. 25% of the sales at the Fish Hatchery Road Little Cesars during this timeframe will be donated to Leopold.

Box Top Collection Deadline!
Remember, Box Tops for this round of collection are due Feb. 21!! this is a change from what the collection sheet says, so be sure to get your kids cutting this week!

New Collection Boxes
In an effort to clean up our school lobby, the PFO has put up metal mailboxes for the collection of Box Tops, Labels for Education and pop tabs. The mailboxes are mounted low enough for students to reach, are clearly marked for each item, and have a slot on top to slip in the items. The mailboxes are mounted on the wall across from the Post Road doors.

Timber Wolf Trample t-shirt Design Contest
Backpack flyers were sent home last week for our first-ever Trample t-shirt design contest. So get your budding artist working! Entries are due March 5. Entry forms will also be posted on the Timber Wolf Trample page of the PFO website as soon as it's ready.

Trample Volunteers
We are still in need of a couple key volunteers for the Timber Wolf Trample. We are thankful to those who have already stepped up to handle important aspects of this fun day for our school. If you would please consider helping with food, race logistics (ribbons, bibs, etc.), or organizing grade-level grants for teachers who help out, our school would benefit greatly from your time.

School Announcements
  • Kindergarten registration is Monday, March 4, from 1:00-6:00 pm at all MMSD elementary schools.
  • MSCR offers Safe Haven Summer Camps, a structured child care program for children in entering grades 1-5, at local schools. Activities include art, science and games. Safe Haven Summer Camps take place June 24 - August 16, 7:45 am – 5:30 pm at Falk, Glendale, Lapham and Lindbergh Schools. Registration forms are available at school offices where Safe Haven Summer Camps are taking place, or you can call 204-6561 to have a form mailed or go to www.mscr.org for more information.

Leopold PFO Update 1/17/13

1/17/2013

Hello Leopold Families!  Lots of news to bring you this Thursday night!

Important Dates
The 4K registration for MMSD residents is February 04, 2013 from 1:00-6:00 PM at all MMSD elementary schools except Lincoln, Randall and Marquette. Although Leopold is not a 4K site for next fall, students in our attendance area can register at our school for the program. I will post the full announcement for this on the PFO blog.

If you have an incoming kindergarten student (like me!), kindergarten registration is March 4, 2013 from 1:00-6:00 PM. Please share this information with friends and neighbors. If you know someone who would like more information about Leopold, or to take a tour of our school, please have them call the school office at 204-4240.

On March 12, 2013 Leopold will hold a meeting for all incoming kindergarten parents at 6 p.m. This will be an informational meeting to learn more about our school and the kindergarten options available (dual immersion, traditional classrooms, etc.).

If you have a 5th grader headed to middle school next year, please join us on February 12 at 7 p.m. in the library, for a middle school informational night. Principals from Cherokee and Wright middle schools, as well as our COPS officer, teachers and a parent panel will all present.

There is no school next Monday, January 21 in honor of MLK day.

Report cards are scheduled to come out on February 1.

Book Fair
Leopold’s annual book fair will be open from Monday, January 28 - Thursday, January 31. We are looking for parent volunteers to help at the book fair. Volunteers help students identify books they like, and when open to families, help shoppers find books and check out. This is a fun and easy way to get involved at our school and there are shifts available at all times of the day. Please follow the link to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409084AACAE2CA13-2013

Leopold Night at Qdoba
Qdoba Mexican Grill, located at 5401 Caddis Bend Road in Fitchburg, will host a fundraising night for the Leoopld PFO this Tuesday, January 22, from 5-9 p.m. For this fundraiser, you MUST bring a small flyer in to show you are from Leopold (saying you're from Leopold isn’t enough!). The brightly colored flyer will go home with students next Monday or Tuesday, and is also attached to this email and will be posted on the website. If you don't get one home from school, or want to give one to friends and neighbors, feel free to print on out yourself. We will try to have extras available wherever we can but we are prohibited from handing them out at the door.

Box Tops and Fundraising
Our wonderful BoxTop cutting extraordinaire, Jessica, submitted 11,554 box tops last time around (this is UP from previous reports!). Another collection is underway, with BoxTops due March 8. Congratulations to Mr. Langer's 5th grade class on their extraordinary collection last time around with 1,356 BoxTops collected!

As a reminder, you can also visit the BoxTops marketplace (http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/marketplace/Default.aspx) to earn eBoxtops when you shop online.

Another way to collect BoxTops is to visit http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/clip/Projects.aspx for ideas on how to make a collection container to put in your office break room, church lobby, grandma’s senior center, or other place where others can stick their box tops for us!

Please remember to apply for a Target RedCard, either credit or debit, to support our school; shop through the amazon.comlink on our PFO website; collect My Coke Rewards points and donate them to our school; and keep turning in Campbell’s labels and pop tabs. All of these are easy ways to use what we do anyway to easily earn money for our school!

Timberwolf Trample
Planning is underway for the 8th Annual Timberwolf Trample, which will be held on May 11, this year. We are still in need of many volunteers. As the time gets closer, you will be contacted for specific tasks, but if you are interested in helping with the planning or the fundraising, we very much could still use the assistance. Our PFO meeting this week generated some great new ideas, so the more fresh ideas we an bring to this event, the better it will be! We have some fun changes in store for this year’s Trample to both increase involvement and simplify the day.

New this year - we will be holding a student design contest for our Trample t-shirt. All students are welcome to participate! We are finalizing details now, and we will get everyone involved in the fun of designing this year’s tee. Watch for more details to come.

Thanks everyone.
Kris

PFO Email Update 10/28

Hello families. I hope everyone enjoyed the little break we just had, despite the frigid temps! Reality hits tomorrow morning! Here's what's happening.

Leopold Grounds Cleanup (Todd Hanson, Chair)
Please come to Leopold next Sunday, November 4, anytime between 8 and 12 and help us clean up the school grounds. If we work together to rake, trim, and pick up trash if will make a huge difference in the appearance of our school. We are proud of our school, so let's show it at its best! This is an easy way to get involved at our school, especially if you are unable to come volunteer during the week! In the past, there have been as few as three or four families who come for several hours. If 10-15 families come, we can get things cleaned up in just an hour or two, and if even more come, maybe we can spend less than an hour! Bring your family, your rake, and your sense of community!

Election Day Bake Sale (Lisa Shebesta, Chair)
A message from Lisa Shebesta...
It's that time of year, vote for your candidate. This is a great opportunity to raise money for Leopold. We will be hosting a bake sale in the Leopold lobby because our school is a polling place. This means we need tons of treats and breakfast baked goods. If you can make something for the sale please email me at [email protected] so that I have an idea of how much product to expect. Please also let me know when you might drop it off at school.  Items can be dropped off Monday or Tuesday morning at the office. Ideally the items would be in serving size packaging.

If baking is not your "thing", it's not mine, you could make a monetary donation and mark it "bake sale". I will use that money to purchase baked goods.

Please call with any questions, Lisa Shebesta, 215-6475. Thank you for your support. I'm Lisa Shebesta and I approve this message.

Help Leopold Become Greener
Leopold's new REACH Science teacher, Kelsey Kosterman, is already hard at work on some new green initiatives at Leopold. Below is a letter from Kelsey regarding the new Leopold Green Team. Many of you have expressed interest in helping make Leopold a more sustainable school. I would ask, if this issue is  important to you, that you please consider supporting Kelsey's efforts and Leopold in this important endeavor.

From Kelsey...
Dear Families,
Leopold has been accepted to be an Mpower ChaMpion this year! We are one of five schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District to be accepted for our passion in making our school more sustainable, healthy and educated. This is an opportunity for us all to work together to make Leopold an even better learning environment than it already is.

What is MPower? The MPower School ChaMpions Program works with local schools to put them on the path to becoming “greener” more sustainable schools. It helps teachers, administrators, parents and students create a vision of what sustainability can look like for their school, and it provides the tools, resources and support to take those ideas from conception to completion.

The Green Team is looking for you! We would appreciate any and all parent input. At the kick off meeting we will be selecting three projects to implement during the program, one in each of three categories: Decreasing Environmental Impact, Promoting Health, and Developing Environmental and Sustainability Literacy. If you have any ideas of projects that we could do please consider attending the meeting on Tuesday, October 30. If you are unable to attend but would still like to share suggestions, please e-mail me at [email protected].

The Green Team will kick off with a meeting on Tuesday, October 30 at 3:15. We will be meeting in the Leopold Science Lab in room 214. Come one and all to share your ideas on three projects that we can complete this year to make Leopold a more sustainable learning environment. Snacks will be provided! Thanks for your time and consideration!

Video Help Wanted
Are you an experienced film maker? Or just a mom or dad who can make cool movies on your computer? Either way, Leopold's new website editors would like some help making a video or videos for the school website. If you might be interested - even if you've never done it before, contact me and I'll put you in touch with the right people to make you an Oscar contender.

Pop Tops
If you've been collecting pop tops, there is now a 5-gallon collection container right outside of the school office.  At our house, we've set out a small plastic container on our kitchen counter to collect pop tops, and then we'll take it to dump it in at school when it's full. So simple!

PFO Blog
I've added a Blog link to the PFO website. I will post these emails there in case you ever want to look back at something. Find it here: http://www.leopoldpfo.org/leopold-pfo-blog.html

Ongoing
Target RedCard....BoxTops contest....My Coke Rewards....Open Schoolhouse on Tuesdays from 6-8....

Have a great week!
